OnePlus confirms the OnePlus 5 getting ready for summer release

OnePlus has confirmed that the successor to the OnePlus 3T is due for release soon. The OnePlus 5 has been rumored and hinted at for a while, but now it is official. The company has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will come out some time this summer, according to The Verge.

The follow-up to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is coming out, and it won't be called the OnePlus 4.So why is OnePlus apparently skipping 4 and going straight to 5? Speculators suggest that the number four is considered unlucky in China, where OnePlus is headquartered. Apparently the folks at OnePlus were also influenced by retired NBA player Robert Horry, The Verge said. There are reportedly two paintings of Horry, who wore the number five on his jersey, hanging in the office.

OnePlus has confirmed that the successor to the OnePlus 3T is due for release soon. The OnePlus 5 has been rumored and hinted at for a while, but now it is official.

In a slightly unusual move, rather than making a direct announcement about the upcoming flagship killer, OnePlus instead chose to reveal the future launch to the Verge. Beyond "summer," we know nothing about the specifics of the launch but there are plenty of leaks and rumors to go on for the time being.

While the naming may seem a little strange, OnePlus is not taking a leaf out of Microsoft's book. Windows 9 failed to materialize for reasons best known to Microsoft, but the OnePlus 4 will not see the light of day due to the fact that the number four is considered unlucky in China.

The Verge says that "OnePlus has exclusively confirmed that its next flagship smartphone will arrive this summer."

Despite all the hints, official details are still being kept under wraps. However, some info allegedly leaked when a listing for the OnePlus 5 appeared on retail site Oppomart. Rumored details include the following:

5.5-inch QHD display with 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution
12 megapixel dual-rear cameras, 8 megapixel front camera
Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor
6GB of RAM
Fingerprint scanner on the front
Oppomart also lists the price as $449 (approximately £346 or AU$605) and gives an estimated ship date of early June. Sounds like we'll hear more rumors and teases in the coming weeks.
